Projects  2019-2020

BANGALORE

  Education

  • Individual Scholarship: Hemashree are medical student at Bapuji Ayurvedic Collage, Callakare, Karnatka. She has improve every each year. This is final year  of her studies.

  • Teacher Training:- Shanthala has been involved during the academic year 2019-2020 in trying to improve education foundation  of elementary school by working with teachers. This oversight was motivated by the questions of whether providing and mid-day meal has benefited the students academically. This impression in early 2019 was that academics at the school remained poor.

  • Evaluation of classes I-V students at Ayyapan School , Bangalore:-Seema Nanda and Kavita Verma conducted a detailed academic evaluation of the elementary school students. They designed short tests in basic math and English to test comprehension. They spent Feb 20-23 administering and compiling the results which were then shared with the school Trustees. The results showed a significant improvement in Class I levels as compared to earlier observations. There are two reasons for this. One, Ayyappan has hired a new teacher for Class I who takes a good deal of interest. Secondly, Shanthala provided considerable guidance, which the teacher followed. Class II was better than Class III and Class IV students in their basic language and math ability. Class V was frankly a failure. On the whole there was some improvement in academic level of the students (barring class V).

PARENT ENGAGEMENT PROGRAM

RURAL AREA

In November 2019, we began a program for parents of children attending government school. Our observation is that poorer parents are not aware of their right to ask questions from teachers. Further they often do not keep a check on their child's school work. We developed templates that enabled parents (literate and illiterate) to track their child’s academic progress. Within 6 weeks of this program we noticed an increased confidence in the parents and an increased engagement of the child with school work. We started first in Hans Nagar followed by Khera Dabar, both rural ares of Delhi, There were 5 women involved in the program in Khera Dabar.
