Online Programs: 2021 saw several online programs with encouraging results.

Conversation English

One-on-one conversational English:- We ran the second year of our one-on-one English conversation where each student was paired with a high school, native English speaker.  This program is now entrenched in the Sector 9 Sabji Market basti and is much sought after. There has been an obvious improvement in spoken and written English among many students. There is more demand than trainers available.

Saturday Activity on Zoom

English storytelling:-   From May through August 2021, every Saturday evening on zoom, we did story telling in English.

English spelling contest:- : Based on the Saturday story telling, a spelling competition was held on the next Tuesday. We ran this program through the summer months of 2021 August, for two different age groups. The program ended with a prize distribution on September 3, 2021. The prize distribution was a public affair. Since then we have been inundated with requests for more spelling competition.

Show-and-tell by students:- Also through the summer months of 2021, each Thursday, students took turns to tell stories, anecdotes, recite poetry, do play acting and share art on weekly Zoom sessions.

Poetry and drawing competition for Independence Day:-  Over 30 students participated in this competition held on August 16, 2021. Prizes were given to the most original art work and the best original poetry. There was a single entry for poetry!!

Story podcast by two students:- : Aaate baate tales (a story podcast for children), invited our children to submit original stories. Anjali and Khushal who submitted stories, were then asked to record stories by other students, for their podcast.   This podcast is heard by a large number of children around the country. (Aate Baate Tales presents बच्चों की कहानी — बच्चों की ज़ुबानी Every alternate day of the week, stories written and narrated by children inspired by characters from the podcast. Library: English lending Library was started for the slum, with a donation of 263 books from Little Learners and others.  It has been a big hit with the girls in particular. The freedom to choose a book and take it home is something new for them. The library has also become a conduit for us to assess ability of students and help them improve their English.

Remedial Classes:  Volunteer Pamela Jose spent the months of August and September 2021 giving one-on-one coaching to 6 girls in dire
need of help. Pamela Jose has spent her life teaching children from the slums of RK Puram. She essentially ran a free school out of her residence. Her thrice weekly sessions were aimed at teaching very basic English and Math to these girls.  3 of these girls went from knowing no English to being able to read at a basic level independently.
